The Liver Birds rise above the fog one sunny morning in November. This was the photograph that started my career in photography. Although I have taken more images of fog and cloud inversions over Liverpool since taking this photograph, I have never experienced conditions quite like this.
Fortunately on this day the tower of the Anglican Cathedral was still open to visitors so I headed up there for the view, and I will never forget the scene that greeted me when I reached the top. The whole city below was shrouded in thick fog apart from the very tallest buidings. Using my long lens I managed to pick out the two Liver Birds atop the Liver Building, both highlighted by the warm glow of the recently risen sun. After posting on my social media, the image quickly went viral and several people contacted me asking to buy a print version of it. 'Rise Above' is still my best selling print to date, and is truly a unique photograph of Liverpool's most famous landmark.
